PlayStation Background

Sony PlayStation was first introduced in Japan in 1994. PlayStation gained recognition and praise for its 3-dimensional graphics (most notably from Bill Gates), targeted 18-29-year-olds, and helped Sony to take the lead over Nintendo and Sega in the gaming industry by the 1990’s. It had the longest production life of any gaming console (11 years) and was the first highly successful brand to use discs instead of cartridges.

PlayStation Hardware Problems

Common problems with the earliest models included poorly placed vents which led to overheating. This created a domino effect of issues including warping of the plastic mouldings that then affected the laser placement; it no longer pointed directly at the CD (prompting data read errors). The laser was already in danger of overheating due to its proximity to the power supply and because the cases and moveable parts were completely made of plastic. Later models incorporated parts with die cast metals and moved the laser further from the heat source.

Additional PlayStation Repair Issues

Another issue with PlayStation and later Sony gaming models (PlayStation 2-4 and PSP 1000, 2000 and 3000) was a variety of symptoms associated with them that may indicate a need for repair.

These symptoms include:

  • Skipping in the motion video
  • ‘ticking noises’ in the units
  • Games not loading
  • PlayStation not turning on
  • Controller not responding
  • PlayStation resetting itself during games
  • Memory card not being read
  • Disc drive errors
  • Failure to read optical media
  • Yellow Light of Death (YLOD)
  • Blinking blue light
